Shepard Fairey Faces Up To 6 Months In Jail For Obama Poster

Street artist Shepard Fairey plead guilty two weeks ago to criminal contempt and word is out that he could now face up to 6 months in jail. Fairey admitted to officials that he falsified documents to cover up that he had in fact used an Associated Press photo as the foundation for his viralHope poster featuring  after initially stating the photo he used was from a non-AP owned source. The copyright infringement part of this case between Fairey and the Associated Press has been settled behind closed doors, but U.S. Attorneys at the Justice Department aren’t ready to close the case just yet. In fact, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara claims that Fairey, “went to extreme lengths to obtain an unfair and illegal advantage in his civil litigation, creating fake documents and destroying others in an effort to subvert the civil discovery process.” In short, they claim that Fairey used his vast digital media resources and other efforts to hide the truth from Federal investigators before eventually admitting his fault, which amounts to charges of contempt under Federal law. Fairey plead guilty to these charges and U.S. Attorneys intend on seeking “some term of imprisonment at sentencing.” via: 12ozProphet
