People scoffed slightly when first hearing of Apple‘s MacBook Air back in 2008, as the technology giant debuted a computer with no CD/DVD drive, nor much capability for memory – amenities we’ve come to expect from laptops these days. At this present point in the chronicle of the Macbook Air, the design sits triumphantly at the top. CD’s and DVD’s inch toward obscurity in a memory-driven technological landscape, and peripheral devices tend to take over the rest.

Apple continues to push the Macbook Air with increasing degrees of success, with the most recent version being unveiled at WWDC just recently. The new design finds the Air upgraded with fourth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, 802.11ac WiFi connectivity with expanded range, 8GB of blitzing 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory. Alongside 12 hours of battery stamina and a minimum 128GB of flash-based storage, these features make the MacBook Air a powerful, undeniable player in the laptop game. With a starting price of $999 USD though, they also make it an affordable one. Look for the 2013 MacBook Air on Apple’s web site now.

Not content to let Microsoft have all the attention, Sony has released a blurry teaser for its Playstation 4 just one day ahead of its rival’s big Xbox reveal. There are a lot if close ups and difficult-to-decipher geometry, but the intent here is clear – Sony is going to show us what the PS4 actually looks like. The company got some flack for holding its big reveal in February without actually revealing the console, and now it’s saying that its ready to do right.

Sony also recently teased a reveal for a likely Playstation 4 game called Panopticon, interestingly scheduled as the same day release for the Microsoft’s event. As John Gaudiosi and Paul Tassi have recently been debating, eyeballs are crucial are crucial at this stage in the next console race. It’s still ver early in the game, but both of these consoles are going to need to build considerable buzz going into fall, and they have only each other to compete with. You can see this horse race play out in the timing of these announcements. Mindshare is the only currency in the console war right now – while Sony jumped out ahead revealing its console first, Microsoft now has a big opportunity to answer some of the questions left dangling by the PS4.

This console race is a high-stakes game. We have only two players (sorry, Nintendo , but I think that’s true in this context), both releasing big consoles at the same time, both competing for the same worldwide attention for reveals, and, probably, both playing a similar stable of third-party games. Microsoft is fighting to become the dominant force in living room entertainment, but Sony may be fighting
